Article 7 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) states “Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the political and public life of the country…”
India is one of the countries that have ratified the treaty. While we have expressed reservations on Articles 5(a), 16(1), 16(2), and 29, we are supposedly fully endorsing Article 7. But as anyone who has been following our Women’s Quota Bill and its convoluted route knows this endorsement is more of a concept and less of a reality. Continue reading
